The Farmers Birds : GR32
Over the last 30 years, there has been a notable increase of interest taken in birds all over the world and South Africa has been no exception. In our case, much of the credit must go to two pioneers, Dr Leonard Gill of Cape Town and Dr Austin Roberts of Pretoria whose books enabled beginners to identify the birds they saw. The present book had its origin in articles which I contributed to THE FARMERS WEEKLY 1963/64. A book of this nature cannot hope to cover the whole 800 or so species of birds in Southern Africa and I therefore concentrated on those which are common or conspicuous or of agricultural importance. It is my hope that farmers and others bird lovers will derive profit and enjoyment from this book – J. M. Winterbottom.
